A Visit to Waynesville, North Carolina Leaves You Wanting More

Written by Teresa Gibbs

Nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Waynesville, North Carolina, is one of my favorite mountain towns. Its rivers and lakes offer excellent opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and tubing. Known for its stunning mountain scenery and outdoor adventures, Waynesville is a must-visit destination.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Waynesville has deep ties to Appalachian history and Cherokee heritage. Its rich cultural tapestry is evident in its festivals and local events. The town’s arts community makes it an ideal destination for those who appreciate creativity and craftsmanship. Its vibrant downtown features locally owned art galleries showcasing the work of regional artists.

From charming bed-and-breakfasts to rustic mountain cabins, Waynesville offers a range of accommodations for a cozy retreat after a day of exploring. On a recent getaway, my husband and I had the pleasure of staying at the Andon-Reid Inn Bed and Breakfast, a charming and historic inn known for its warm hospitality.

Waynesville is about a five-hour drive from the Huntsville area, so we set out early, taking our time to enjoy the journey. Our spring road trip wasn’t just about reaching our destination—it was about the experiences along the way, the spontaneous detours, the hidden gems we discovered, and the beauty of nature in full bloom.

Upon our arrival, innkeepers Brenda and Peter warmly welcomed us, making us feel right at home. They gave us a tour of the Andon-Reid Inn. Originally built in 1902, this beautifully restored inn has an elegant yet cozy atmosphere with gorgeous mountain views. The gathering room, along with six guest rooms, tastefully blends historical charm with modern comfort.

We were shown to our room, the Garden Suite, which featured a spacious bathroom and a cozy sitting area with a fireplace—perfect for the cool mountain air. Thoughtful touches like plush robes and homemade cookies made our stay even more special.

Food lovers will find plenty to enjoy downtown, where locally owned restaurants, cafés, and breweries create memorable dining experiences. Whether you’re craving classic Southern dishes like barbecue, fried green tomatoes, or shrimp and grits; international flavors like Italian pastas or Mexican cuisine; or a globally inspired fusion dish paired with a craft beer, Waynesville has something to satisfy every palate.

Downtown Waynesville is a fifteen-minute walk from the inn or a five-minute drive. Tired and ready to eat, we opted to drive. Although the downtown area was busy for a Wednesday night, we found parking fairly easily. We browsed unique shops filled with handmade crafts and stopped at a cozy café for a light meal while enjoying the stunning mountain views.

When we returned to the inn, the rocking chairs on the wraparound porch invited us to relax and take in the breathtaking views while enjoying warm chocolate chip cookies and a cup of coffee.

Before retiring for the night, we headed downstairs to the activity room, which offers books, board games, a large shuffleboard, a pool table, and exercise equipment.

With its location, a basement full of fun, and plenty of nearby excursions and activities, the inn would be a great place for a family gathering.

Each morning, we were treated to a gourmet breakfast featuring freshly brewed coffee, homemade pastries, and a rotating menu of sweet and savory mouthwatering dishes—a perfect way to start a day of adventure.

Waynesville’s proximity to the Blue Ridge Parkway and Great Smoky Mountains National Park makes it an ideal home base for scenic drives and hiking. One of our favorite activities is driving along the Parkway, stopping at designated overlooks to take in the mesmerizing views, and exploring exhilarating hiking trails.

A short 30-minute drive from Waynesville takes you to Asheville, home to the renowned Biltmore Estate. If you plan to visit, booking tickets in advance is a smart move, especially during peak seasons or holidays. Comfortable walking shoes are a must, as the estate’s house, gardens, and Antler Hill Village require plenty of exploring. On this visit, we arrived early and were well-prepared for a day of walking.

Each time I visit North Carolina, I leave with a longing to return and explore even more of what this incredible state has to offer. Until then, I’ll cherish the memories of Waynesville’s hospitality and look forward to future adventures.
